Ghosts, goblins and ghouls are scary, but so are allergy attacks. This year, take a little bit of time out of your spooky prep to read a few of our essential tips for throwing an allergy-friendly Halloween party.
1. Send Allergy-Aware Invitations
One of the best ways to avoid an allergic reaction at your party is to include an allergy option on your invitation. Before you head to the Far East Super Market, ask your guests to alert you of any severe food, skin or environmental allergies to help you prepare a safe party.
2. Clearly Label Food
Labeling food with allergy information is one of the best ways to minimize reactions. Check your food labels for allergy information (usually under the nutrition information and list of ingredients) and write a visible sign detailing the known allergies. For example, if you’re putting out a tray of walnut-filled Franken-brownies, write “contains tree nuts” on a card next to the plate. This tip will be especially helpful for kids who may not be the best at managing their food allergies yet.
3. Tone Down Scents
Although the exact prevalence is difficult to determine, approximately 4.5% of adults may be allergic to fragrance materials, and even more people experience irritation or sensitivity to scented products. Awareness of fragrance sensitivities is on the rise—many workplaces, hospitals and daycares now have scent-free policies. Since people might not always mention their sensitivities, limiting the use of scented products at your Halloween party is smart. Common sources of fragrances include hairsprays, perfumes, candles and aerosol sprays, all of which could trigger discomfort for some guests.
4. Stock up on Non-Food Party Gifts
Kids can feel left out when they can’t enjoy the same Halloween treats as their friends. To make sure everyone feels included, offer fun non-food alternatives. Stock up on glow sticks, party games and other exciting activities to keep the focus on fun and minimize any feelings of exclusion.
5. Double-Check for Face Paint Sensitivities
Face painting is a great party activity, but the paint can sometimes trigger skin allergies. Before creating fun designs like skeletons or cute cats, review the paint ingredients with your guests to check for any sensitivities.
