Dressing up as a superhero, a pirate or your favorite movie character and trick-or-treating around Huntsville with your family is what makes Halloween so fun. If you or your children have sensitive skin, choosing allergy-friendly Halloween costumes is crucial.

Costumes and accessories may contain materials that can cause allergic reactions. Some of the most common culprits include:
- Latex found in masks, gloves or costume accessories
- Face paints and makeup containing fragrances, preservatives or dyes
- Rough or synthetic fabrics that may irritate sensitive skin
- Metal fasteners, buckles or costume jewelry containing nickel
- Dust and mold that collect on costumes stored from previous years
Knowing what to look for can help you avoid unexpected reactions on Halloween night. Let’s look at a few simple ways you can make your and your children’s costumes safe and comfortable.
Be Careful with Face Paint
Not every face paint product is suitable for sensitive skin. Choose fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products whenever possible.
A few days before dressing up, do a spot test with your chosen face paint by applying a small amount of the product to your or your child’s arm. Let it sit for at least 20 minutes. If the skin under the paint turns red, gets itchy or breaks out into small bumps and hives, wash it off immediately and don’t use it for Halloween. It’s better to learn this now, on a small spot in a controlled environment, than it is to break out in hives on your face away from home.
Check Costume Tags
Look for costumes made with soft, breathable materials, like cotton. If a costume feels scratchy, consider wearing a long-sleeved shirt and leggings underneath to create a protective barrier.
If you or your child has a latex allergy, carefully inspect masks, gloves and other costume accessories. The tags on the costume should also spell out what kinds of material or materials are in the garment. Review these tags to ensure they’re allergy-free.
Watch for Metal Accessories
Belts, crowns, jewelry and costume armor may contain nickel, a common cause of contact dermatitis.[1] Choose outfits without metal components or ensure that the metal does not contain nickel.
Clean Costumes Before Wearing
If you purchased a secondhand costume or pulled one out of storage, clean it well before wearing. Washing fabric costumes according to the care label helps remove dust. You can clean plastic accessories with mild soap and water.
